Did you have a summer reading list? Each year as a young girl, I had a list of 30 or so books that my school recommended that I read. While to many kids this might have been a chore, to me it was my ticket to freedom. F-READ-om.
I’ve just posted a new illustrated essay, “Summer Reading,” that tells a story about those purple mimeographed lists, and the gifts they gave me. Thanks to David Pepper for his great technical editing, and Jen Lee for one golden sentence. Also a big hug to all my Craft Nite pals – Vanessa, Miriam, Arabella, Kate, and Deb – who really helped me think through my illustration, “Bell Jar Education.” Hope you like it!
