As a little girl, my grandmother, a retired dressmaker, used to sew clothes for my dolls. She would make tiny little ensembles suit jackets, skirts with belts – appropriate dress for a day at the office, or a trip to the grocery store. She did this for my amusement, but based on the volume and artistry involved, I think she did this for herself, as well.

A knitter myself these days, I feel connected to her and the work she made by a thread, or strand of yarn.
